The part-time Master's programme M.Sc. Periodontology is designed for dentists who wish to deepen their knowledge of the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases. The curriculum combines evidence-based treatment planning with periodontal surgery, regenerative and mucogingival procedures, prevention and long-term maintenance care.
The degree programme is offered by the by the International Medical College (IMC) in cooperation with the Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden. TU Dresden is the degree-awarding university. Scientific principles, evidence-based clinical decision-making and practical application are closely integrated throughout the programme.
The programme is taught entirely in English and is available in two part-time formats: a three-semester programme with 60 ECTS credits and a four-semester programme with 90 ECTS credits. Both options combine e-learning, live online lectures, practical training and clinical learning. The four-semester option includes an additional semester dedicated to scientific work and empirical research.

The basic modules provide the medical, diagnostic and surgical foundation required for advanced periodontal care. Topics include anatomy and histology, immunology and inflammatory processes, medical history and the management of medically compromised patients, emergency medicine, pharmacology, local anaesthesia, radiological diagnosis including CBCT, hygiene, oral mucosal diseases, odontogenic infections, traumatology and dentoalveolar surgery.
The specialisation modules focus on the healthy periodontium and the classification, epidemiology, aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Further subjects include the histopathology and microbiology of periodontitis, periodontal assessment and treatment planning, plaque control, periodontal debridement, periodontal surgery and the effects of systemic diseases on periodontal health. Particular attention is given to regenerative and mucogingival procedures, peri-implant diseases, prevention and supportive periodontal care.
Students learn to diagnose, treat and provide long-term follow-up care for complex periodontal cases using evidence-based approaches. They develop the ability to select and perform regenerative and mucogingival procedures according to the clinical indication and to integrate prevention and treatment concepts into their own clinical practice.
Digital learning materials are available through the IMC learning platform and can be studied flexibly. Live online lectures are generally recorded and supplemented by practice questions. Practical and clinical training supports the transfer of scientific knowledge to patient assessment, treatment planning, surgical procedures, the management of peri-implant diseases and interdisciplinary care involving implantology and prosthodontics.
The programme is designed for experienced dentists and builds on existing clinical practice while accommodating different levels of professional experience. The responsible examination board decides whether modules can be recognised and whether this results in a reduction of tuition fees after the relevant certificates have been reviewed.
